“Don’t go and pack your heart up, promise me you’ll start again, and even better with someone new. Please have no regrets, I wish you all the best and know every moment meant something to me too. ‘Cause I already miss you right beside me while we cross the street. I miss the way you’d talk to strangers with your arm around me. And I even miss the unevenness of the two of us hand in hand. ‘Cause for an evening there, as I’m leaving, I wonder if you wonder what I mean when I say that it’s not you, no. It’s just me, myself, and my stup*d habit of breaking hearts as soon as I have them.” – lyrics

‘For an Evening’ tells an unhappy tale about a young woman who recognizes that she and her partner aren’t meant to be together as a couple. She realized this one day when they ran into her partner’s friends. He had a huge smile on his face when he mentioned her name, and his friends could tell that she was the one for him because he couldn’t stop talking about her. Later, with a heavy heart, she tells him, “When we ran into my friends, I paused as I said your name. I didn’t say what you were to me.”

‘For an Evening’ contains a sad, love-loss narrative and ear-pleasing vocals that will resonate well with fans of Maggie Rogers, Holly Humberstone, and Gracie Abrams. The gloomy tune possesses piano-laden instrumentation flavored with indie and contemporary folk elements.

“For an evening there you were my man.”

“‘For an Evening’ is a coming-to-term song, in the context of the end of a romantic relationship. It’s kind of a non-traditional breakup song in that it’s meant to reassure the other person that everything that was shared was very real, and nothing, in particular, was wrong in the relationship. It’s the realization that that person is just not ‘the one’ and you hope that they find the person that’s right for them.” – Emily James explained

Emily James began her musical journey by singing and taking piano lessons. By the time she was ten, she was writing her songs. Over time, James has developed her own sound and songwriting style that features nuanced production and an emotional vulnerability that complements her vocal range.
