“I ain’t really been myself ever since you’ve been away. I heard that your new lil’ friend is trying to take my place. In hell, feeling hazy, you got me talking crazy, yeah. I’ve been getting wavy. Baby, I’ve been feeling like my heart is turning ice blue. Like a Colorado winter, it’s been frozen too soon. Like a tinted Maserati underneath the white moon. Like the hunnids in my pocket ‘n’ all the pain I go through.” – lyrics

‘Blue’ tells a heartfelt tale about a young woman who experiences sadness after going through a severe breakup with her significant other. Often, she finds herself staring at the ceiling and wondering how her ex-partner is feeling. With a heavy heart, she admits, “I’ve been down these streets trying to get you out of my head. Another one in these sheets to fill my emptiness.”

The Daniel Choi-directed video is reminiscent of the ‘90s and 2000s R&B girl groups that Kayla Rae grew up listening to. She channels the universal feelings of watching the person you love be happy with someone else. In the unapologetically vulnerable and enrapturing track, the songstress captures the high and low moments familiar to all break-ups, ultimately finding empowerment in overcoming it all.

“I’m blue ’cause I’m missing you.”

Kayla Rae was born into a family of five siblings and raised by her single mother in Colorado Springs. Growing up, Kayla’s mother encouraged her to pursue music. During that time, she was inspired by the sounds of Boyz II Men, SWV, The Carpenters, Whitney Houston, and MC Lyte.

Kayla made her first major mark on the industry with her 2020 project, “Pressure,” which led her to open up for Doja Cat, Tyga, and Ashanti, just before the world went into lockdown. After making the move from Colorado to Los Angeles, Kayla was selected to join the LAAMP (Los Angeles Academy for Artists and Music Production) program where she worked with Stargate, Ant Clemons, Jozzy, Ne-Yo, and many more. With her striking vocals and infectious energy, Kayla’s cementing her place as an artist to watch in 2023.
