“Ain’t Free” delivers a powerful message of self-worth, liberty, and empowerment. IVANA’s poignant lyrics serve as a rallying cry for those who have struggled to break free from unhealthy relationships. The line “My love ain’t free” encapsulates a central theme, emphasizing the invaluable nature of self-respect and the importance of not settling for less in any relationship. This declaration sets the tone for the rest of the song, where IVANA firmly asserts her independence and self-worth.

Another key line, “I won’t be running right back to you,” further exemplifies the theme of personal growth and the resolve to avoid falling back into detrimental patterns. By articulating these sentiments, IVANA echoes the broader narratives found in the works of artists like Snoh Aalegra, Cleo Sol, and Joy Crookes. IVANA sings, “I spill my cup now all my love is on the floor and I don’t know how to clean it up.”

The impact of “Ain’t Free” on listeners, particularly women, is profound. The song encourages them to recognize and assert their own value, not just in romantic relationships but in all aspects of life. By sharing her journey through her music, IVANA inspires others to embrace their independence and break free from any constraints that prevent them from realizing their true worth.

“I started ‘Ain’t Free’ with a bass line in my bedroom studio in London, and from that came a song about realizing your worth in (or out) of a relationship, which I hope can reach and inspire other women. I co-produced the song with my good friend Pete, with some instrumentation from my amazing band.” – IVANA stated

IVANA is heavily influenced by her love for neo-soul, R&B, and jazz. She writes and co-produces her own music. Born in Bilbao to a Spanish mother and English father, IVANA grew up most of her life in the musical hub of London. She started writing songs at age 10, learning to produce at 15.

The seeds for IVANA’s love and aptitude for music were sown early in her childhood as her father, Ben Bartlett, is a BAFTA award-winning classical composer who taught her piano from a young age. After self-teaching herself guitar and bass guitar, IVANA has become a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. Her father’s love for jazz sparked IVANA’s appreciation of the genre and led to her eventual discovery of seminal artists such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Sade, and Marvin Gaye. More recent inspirations of hers include Snoh Aalegra, Ari Lennox, and Olivia Dean to name a few.
