Matilda Cole is a talented young singer-songwriter based in Brighton, England. Not too long ago, she released a gorgeous music video for her “Again” single, directed by Amy Becker-Burnett.
Matilda Cole – “Again” music video
“Want you to breathe me in, get under your skin. I’m up at 3 am, picturing your room again. I wanna read your mind ‘cause you’re all over mine. I want you all the time, I’m so sick of it. I’ll bite my tongue when you hurt me ‘cause baby I… I’d let you do it again if you’d love me for half of the time then it’s fine, I could just let it go. I think I did it again, said, ‘I hate you,’ then stared at your name in my phone until I let go – and I know it’s my fault.” – lyrics
‘Again’ tells a lovesick tune about a young, insecure woman who shares a fading relationship with her significant other. Apparently, she’s tired of them always fighting all the time – then kissing and making up like nothing’s wrong. One day, she realizes that she doesn’t know what it’s like to love without consequence. Therefore, she admits, “Something should have warned me it would be like this, I should know the cycle by now.” Later that day, in a defeated tone of voice, she tells her companion, “Kick me out and I’ll come back tomorrow like a dog at your door, doting and docile.”
“Doting and docile.”
‘Again’ contains a relationship-based narrative, ear-pleasing vocals, and tuneful melodies that will resonate well with fans of emie nathan, Issey Cross, and RVBY. The emotional tune possesses moody guitar and piano-laden instrumentation flavored with a warm contemporary pop vibration. Furthermore, “Again” encourages affection because holding your partner’s hand in public doesn’t make you less of a man or woman.
“Want you to speak your mind, not just when you’re high. I love you all the time and I’m so sick of it.”
“I wrote ‘Again’ about that all too familiar cycle of wanting someone so much that you let them hurt you again and again. I thought the idea of not being loved at all was worse than being loved in the wrong way. So I tolerated behavior that I really shouldn’t have.” – Matilda Cole explained
‘Again’ serves as a masterful act of storytelling, something that Matilda Cole is clearly a natural at. “Again,” her first release of 2022, indicates that Cole is destined for a fabulous year. With her debut live show locked in for April 14, 2022, at The Courtyard, we expect to be hearing a lot more from this promising young artist.
Over the last year, Matilda has firmly secured herself as an artist-to-watch. The indie-pop riser has gained support from a wealth of notable tastemakers and her debut EP, “Milk Teeth,” sits at over two million streams.
“We could never be friends, you’d just tease me, let me believe it was real, and then you’d let me down. I think I know how it ends.”
