Kianja releases a heart-wrenching R&B ballad, entitled, “Leave Me Behind”

Kianja is a talented singer-songwriter from East London, England. Not too long ago, she released a heart-wrenching R&B ballad, titled, “Leave Me Behind,” which explores the strain of age difference in a relationship.

“I thought it’d be easy, you and me. How can I be so naive for 23? We both shared the same ideal, the same philosophy. But I can’t make up for all those years that you hang over me. Maybe, it’s just a case of time. No way to cheat it, no race ever beat it. Why do we try to cross that line? Maybe it’s just a case of time.” – lyrics

‘Leave Me Behind’ tells a relevant tale about a young woman who hopes to one day become the kind of woman that her significant other is longing for. He’s an older man, and she’s 23, still a girl at heart, naive, and immature in many ways. Unable to handle their age difference causes her to tell her partner, “I can’t change the reason, I need you to leave me, leave me behind. ‘Cause I know that it would be selfish of me to keep you here, just because you care – when I can’t make you happy.”

‘Leave Me Behind’ is laced with ear-pleasing vocals, soulful melodies, and a problematic relationship-based narrative that will resonate well with fans of Adele, Sophie Faith, and Tiana Major9. The song possesses lovely string arrangements and warm production courtesy of a Fender Rhodes. Furthermore, “Leave Me Behind” is a nod to some of Kianja’s strongest influences like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, and Gladys Knight.

“I can’t move any faster, size 4 won’t fill those shoes.”

“Age difference can sometimes be a challenge. I’ve always dated guys who are a fair bit older than me, for the most part. It’s never intentional and it’s not necessarily what I want – but I can’t help who I’m drawn to. Sometimes, it felt like I was playing catch up though, I couldn’t make up for the years of experience he had. I knew I needed to do a lot more work on myself and heal from past traumas. Next time round – I want to bring the best version of myself to a relationship and feel more prepared to contribute to a long-lasting partnership.” – Kianja explained

Kianja creates music to express herself, clear her mind, and simply because she enjoys it. She shares music to give listeners a shoulder to cry on, a hand to dance with, words of encouragement, and a space to feel in full color. That’s what she’s about.
