Joël is a rising singer-songwriter based in Toronto, Canada. Not too long ago, he released a melodic R&B single, entitled, “On Point”.
Joël – “On Point” single
“The process itself was inspiring. I was listening to everybody from J Moss and Jasmine Sullivan to Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins, plus everything in-between. What honestly inspired me the most was life itself; from love and heartbreak to hunger and hardships… that’s sh*t GRUNGE GOSPEL.” – Joël stated
‘On Point’ finds Joël flexing his gospel-influenced vocal prowess to the fullest. The likable tune contains a relatable narrative, ear-welcoming vocals, and tuneful melodies. Also, the song possesses melodic instrumentation decorated with contemporary R&B and urban-trap elements. Furthermore, “On Point” serves as a fantastic presentation to what listeners can expect to hear on Joël’s hotly-anticipated new EP, entitled, “GRUNGE GOSPEL (Side B)”.
“GRUNGE GOSPEL (Side B)” EP
Following on from last September’s “GRUNGE GOSPEL (Side A)”, the new EP harnesses an angsty R&B vibe, channeling Joël’s self-described ‘grunge gospel’ sound into something both smooth and hard-hitting. The 7-track project features previously released singles—“Woes” and “I’m really tryna hear you out but…”. The latter was championed by Joe Budden on his podcast.
In the second chapter of Joël’s journal, each song represents a very important moment and memory in his life. The song-writing process with producer Colin Munroe in L.A. last summer opened him up to the sounds of the aforementioned bands—far removed from the R&B, hip-hop, and soul music he grew up with. With his religious upbringing as a pastor’s son (and this newfound respect for grunge music), Joël combines a sound that’s unique, youthful, and urgent—at a time where music and escapism are needed more than ever.
