“Last Christmas” is a tender, stripped-down take on a holiday classic that trades glossy pop for emotional clarity and lets the heartbreak shine through.
In her own words, Ava Della Pietra explains, “‘Last Christmas’ has always been one of my favorite holiday songs. Its upbeat sound contrasts with a more melancholy lyric. In my cover, I wanted to let that softer, more emotional side emerge, showing the vulnerability at the heart of the song.”
That vulnerability comes through clearly in Ava’s version, which dials back the synth-pop sheen of the original in favor of a slower, more introspective arrangement that foregrounds Ava’s delicate vocals and subtle acoustic instrumentation with live strings. It’s a fitting close to the EP and a reminder of her ability to interpret familiar material in unexpected, emotionally resonant ways.
