Amilli – “I’m Not Tryna Be Your Girl” (Live) | Vevo DSCVR At Home

Vevo DSCVR is a series that highlights artists who are shaping the future of music. One of these artists is Amilli, whose career began with a SoundCloud upload of a track crafted just for fun in a friend’s basement. Shortly afterward, the anti-materialism message of her “Rarri” single upped the ante. Similar to Lorde’s “Royals”, “Rarri” used pop arrangements to forward a barbed notion about the current state of pop music. Naturally, the Internet loved it. Since then, Amilli has established herself as an exciting artist to watch.

Amilli – “I´m Not Tryna Be Your Girl” music video

“I’m not tryna be your girl, I don’t fit into your world. I might get you off of me because you don’t comfort me. Have we ever seemed so weak that we’re so afraid of speech? Has it ever been such crime gaining power over time? Let’s just be more in control, paying attention, and say no. Let’s take one step at a time, so we’re the most divine.” – lyrics

Growing up, Amilli never dreamed of a music career. Her dad loved spinning jazz records and her parents encouraged their children to sing and play instruments. But music was something Amilli “just did for herself”, or in her own words, she “slipped into” it. While her peers are saving their money for the next supreme-drop, Amilli is steady working on her debut project.
