Shay Lia’s “ON THE LOW”: A Groovy Late-Night Afro-R&B Single

Shay Lia (@shayliasphere) is a Djibouti-raised, Montreal-based singer-songwriter from France. Striking while the iron is hot, she got dancefloors moving with the release of her groovy late-night Afro-R&B single, “ON THE LOW,” produced by long-time collaborator, Kaytranada.

Through “ON THE LOW,” Shay Lia uses her hushed vocals to question her lover’s intentions and express frustration with the on-again/off-again nature of their entanglement. “All the games you play, I dare you to tell the truth,” she challenges her partner. Later, Shay finds herself in comfortable territory amongst the instrumentation which provides the infectiously funky backdrop we are used to hearing her against.

“ON THE LOW” is Shay Lia’s and Kaytranada’s 10th collaboration and a true testament to their undeniable chemistry. The winding bassline, paired with melodic flourishes and Shay’s alluring vocals make for the perfect combination to have feet moving and hips swaying back and forth across dance floors globally.

“‘ON THE LOW’ demonstrates our respective growth patterns as artists. When you listen to it, you can tell we have both been explorative in our growth over time. This production sat on my computer for years and it wasn’t connecting for me until I saw Kaytra in Paris this past June. I felt reinspired and we were able to tap back into our natural way of collaborating and sharing a frequency.” – Shay Lia explained

“ON THE LOW” is the latest single from Shay Lia’s upcoming LP, “FACETS,” due for release on October 20th, 2023. Also, the single comes with the announcement of Shay’s European and North American tour dates.

“‘FACETS’ speaks to all of the lives I’ve lived in different cities, countries, times, and spaces. It’s impossible for me to sit comfortably in one specific genre because while my vision is clear, my influences and experiences are layered. It’s an intentional demonstration of all sides of me and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it, feel it, and see parts of themselves in it.” – Shay Lia spoke about her upcoming album, FACETS

“FACETS” finds Shay Lia exploring boundaries within herself and also the wider world, creating an environment in which she can freely flow into any shape she so chooses.

Fans of the eclectic artist will be happy to know that Shay Lia will be embarking on a UK/Europe tour during November of this year, concluding a performance at Camden Assembly in London on the 28th of November. Then in February 2024, Shay will head across the pond where she’ll bring “FACETS” live to key cities including a final stop at Los Angeles’ intimate venue, The Moroccan Lounge on March 2nd.
