“When I initially made the beat, I didn’t have any specific artist or lyrical/vocal approach in mind. I just wanted to make something peaceful, carefree, and a little nostalgic. I think Justy captured those moods perfectly.” – Matt Shi

Matt Shi and Justy met through an interview at WHCS (Hunter College’s radio station). Shortly afterward, Shi posted a snippet of his “Sunnyside View” instrumental via Instagram, and Justy liked it. So he sent her a rough draft.

‘Sunnyside View’ contains a relatable storyline, poetic raps, and easy-going instrumentation flavored with sentimental hip-hop elements. Also, the intimate tune can be appreciated more during quiet and reflective moments.

“‘Sunnyside View’ subtly captures the simplicity of early love. The longing to bask in the innocence of love is captured here all while dealing with obstacles that can deter young love.” – Justy

Justy is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Staten Island, New York. She began writing music at the age of twelve. Since then, she has blossomed into a unique and promising artist. Her musical inspirations include J Dilla, Amy Winehouse, NoName, and Lauryn Hill.

“Give you flowers, you pick petals, guess it never really settles. You be checking my credentials tryna keep it sentimental. Yeah my circle getting smaller, guess it’s all coincidental. If I ever break your heart I got the smoke with the parental. If it’s all wasted potential, we could keep it differential ‘cause our time is of the essence and this time it’s quintessential.” – lyrics

Matt Shi’s sound can be categorized as soulful yet gritty. His musical influences include 9th Wonder, The Alchemist, J Dilla, and other sample-heavy hip-hop producers. His most recent solo project, “Water & Ashes”, is a collection of jazzy beats with an emphasis on balancing different, sometimes opposing, moods.
