Experience the Interstellar Magic of Grandmaster’s “Holy Star” Single

Grandmaster (@grandmaster) is an indie prog/funk/rock collective based in Austin, Texas. Not too long ago, they released their latest indie-alternative single, “Holy Star.”

With an ethereal sonic signature reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire, and the Bee Gees, “Holy Star” (produced and mixed by esteemed Austin, Texas creative Nolan Potter) is the group’s most straightforward release. The interstellar ballad offers listeners a feeling of weightlessness as the band reaches new creative heights with instrumentation and vocal prowess.

“‘Holy Star’ reaches heights that this ensemble has never reached before and the groove offers a vibe that can only be found in Grandmaster’s world. The “‘Holy Star’ is an energy star, and The Grandmaster takes energy from it,” stated Nick Leon of Grandmaster.

Coming off a buzzing week of SXSW performances, as winners of the American Songwriter SXSW VIP Experience, which included an opening slot for music legend Bootsy Collins at the Mohawk in Austin, the 9-piece collective continues to combine lush harmonies with analog synths, blended with vaporous guitar, disco beats, and alternately skyscraping and soulful vocals in their new music.

“In the 1975, we kept the funk alive with the Grandmaster, baby. Giving up the funk on the one.” Boosty Collins stated

Within less than a year, Grandmaster has already converted sold-out audiences into acolytes at an alarming rate, generating hundreds of thousands of streams in the process to boot. The group’s loyal Zealots (fans of Grandmaster) and those freshly anointed will certainly be pleased with this new dose of sonic excellence.

Your muse may be a divinity, a lover, a friend, or nature itself. For Grandmaster, it’s an immortal dimension-hopping ancient composer with whom they share their name and have pledged their undying allegiance. Donning red bucket hats, black uniforms, and white gloves, this cohort of nine seasoned musicians proudly rallies as The Grandmaster’s “Zealots,” performing his “ritualistic funk” compositions as their songs.

As the story goes, co-founders Leon, Eldred, and Mizell met as teens in Texas. Unlocking a lifelong creative bond, they went on to record and perform around Austin in local favorites such as Sexpop, Lick Neon, and Acid Carousel. Following the dissolution of the latter, Leon, Eldred, and Mizell feverishly wrote and recorded songs under the spell of “The Grandmaster.”

At the same time, they also shot an episodic YouTube series, establishing the lore and immersing audiences in a rapidly unfolding ecosystem. At first, their symbology engendered fascination on social media, leading to a string of sold-out shows. Simultaneously, the song “Goldmine” was released in September 2023, and GRANDMASTER was profiled by outlets such as Voyage Austin.
