Gloria Gaynor and Betsy Schechter visit “Good Morning America” to talk about the new documentary, “Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive”

Gloria Gaynor is a two-time Grammy winner and global music legend. Not too long ago, she and filmmaker, Betsy Schechter, visited ABC’s “Good Morning America” to speak with co-anchor Robin Roberts about “Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive,” the feature documentary about Gaynor’s life and comeback journey.

‘I Will Survive’ is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Gloria Gaynor shared why she thinks her hit song continues to resonate with people decades later. “The song celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit. If you’re human, you’ve got a spirit, and the song helps you celebrate, and who doesn’t love to celebrate?”

Later, during the interview, Gaynor mentioned she has new music coming out soon. For that upcoming album, she has teamed up with an amazing group of songwriters who have written for A-list artists such as Taylor Swift, Meghan Trainor, and Miley Cyrus. The project is bound to resonate well with fans of Gloria Gaynor, whose “I Will Survive” single was recently added to the Library of Congress’s national recording registry.

“No matter what pitfalls happen in life, and what you go through and [who] people tell you – you should be, you can go beyond it. And you can create the life you want to live. I learned about faith, whatever your faith is, and faith in yourself.” – Betsy Schechter spoke on what she learned while making the documentary

“At first I was afraid, I was petrified. Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side. But then I spent so many nights thinking how you did me wrong. And I grew strong, and I learned how to get along. And so you’re back from outer space. I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face. I should have changed that stupid lock, I should have made you leave your key. If I’d known for just one second you’d be back to bother me. Go on now, go, walk out the door. Just turn around now ‘cause you’re not welcome anymore.” – lyrics

‘I Will Survive’ tells a heartbreaking tale about a determined young woman who refused to crumble alongside her broken heart. Apparently, it took all the strength she had not to fall apart. A shell of herself, she’s trying to mend the pieces of her heart that she can find. After spending oh-so-many nights feeling sorry for herself, wasting rolls of tissue crying, she decided to hold her head up high towards the sky. Now, she’s somebody new, and not that chained-up little person she once was. Later, she tells the person who told her goodbye, “You think I’d crumble? You think I’d lay down and die? Oh no, not I, I will survive. Oh, as long as I know how to love, I know I’ll stay alive. I’ve got all my life to live and I’ve got all my love to give and I’ll survive.”

“I’m saving all my lovin’ for someone who’s loving me.”

Gloria Gaynor became moved while rewatching a clip of her recent trip to Spain when young students had put on a performance dancing and singing her music. Gaynor stated, “The children–they were on summer vacation. I expected the school to be empty, and yet here they were. It was incredible. And they learned to sing the song. It was incredible.”
