Kristiane (Kristiane Alphson) is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California. Not too long ago, she released a lovely music video for her “State Lines” single, directed by Jeremy Reynoso and Silken Weinberg.
Kristiane – “State Lines” music video
“‘State Lines’ is the anthem to my early twenties, and all the confusion, pain, and bliss that accompany it. Having grown up and stayed in Los Angeles for college, I had never experienced the geographic change that I’d always yearned for. While living here is a complete blessing, I found myself dreaming about life beyond what I know. ‘State Lines’ discusses this need for change, while recognizing the beauty of the life and love I’d be leaving behind. Also, it questions the lengths somebody would go to love me. Would they ‘follow me across state lines,’ in both a metaphorical and literal sense, to keep me in their life? I find empowerment in the subtle confidence and honesty of this song.” – Kristiane explained
‘State Lines’ contains a relatable narrative and ear-pleasing vocals that will resonate well with fans of Soccer Mommy, Phoebe Bridgers, and Snail Mail. The likable tune possesses electric-guitar-driven instrumentation flavored with an alternative pop vibration. Furthermore, “State Lines” is the title track of Kristiane’s upcoming EP, which will be available on August 26, 2022, via FADER Label.
In collaboration with executive producer, Cooper Holzman, the duo was able to craft an anthemic sound that celebrates the beauty of unpredictability in love and identity. Also, Kristiane finds self-assertion in the project, shedding the tentativeness of a teenager, and venturing into early adulthood.
“Thought I knew what I needed, but I never do. I keep falling backwards, running into you.”
Kristiane has always struggled to define a sense of home for herself. Growing up in Los Angeles is an inherently transient experience, and doubly so when you spend your youth moving from neighborhood to neighborhood. The one fixture in her life was her grandmother’s house: the base she could always rely on, the piano she could always return to. Kristiane’s grandmother, having asserted herself in the Hollywood cabaret circuit in her sixties and seventies, would often bring Kristiane along for her performances, encouraging a theatrical way of life from an early age.
After school, Kristiane split her time between her choir and acapella groups, when she wasn’t writing songs in her laundry room. She continued her pursuit of storytelling with a degree in creative writing at the University of Southern California, strengthening her pen while continuing to perform at house gigs across the city. Later, Kristiane signed with FADER Label and released her debut EP, entitled, “I Miss Myself, Sometimes last Fall,” featuring the standout single, “Wish I Could Be Your Girl.” Kristiane is reminiscent of early 2000s artists like Liz Phair and Sharon Van Etten. Her sound contains themes about the complexities of love.

“Thought I knew what I wanted, I just wanted you. It’s my fault I’m here another fall, waiting on you in a city I hate. But God, I love your street as the seasons change, over and over. Tell me I’m right, tell me you’d miss me. You’re not alright with me leaving, you’d follow me across state lines if it took that. Tell me I’m yours into tomorrow. That we’d be fine and you’d follow me across state lines.” – lyrics
