“Cards on the table, king of hearts, deuces high. Please don’t renege on my love and leave me out to dry. I need you round’ when chips are down. Tell me right now, are you in, are you out? Lord Knows I gamble, unafraid to lose. Unafraid to parlay my love and faith to double down on you.” – lyrics
‘Renege (Live Acoustic)’ tells a heartfelt tale about a young guy who shares a challenging relationship with his significant other. Apparently, they’ve been through hell and high water. However, he’s optimistic about their future and needs his darling to give their relationship one last chance.
“Tell me right now, are you in, are you out?”
“I remember my Uncle John abruptly asking me one day if I’d had my heart broken yet. I’ll never forget when I said, ‘Yes.’ He just looked at me very sternly and said, ‘Good.’ I wrote this song to try and capture all the emotions of that first heartbreak and used Spades as a metaphor because I’d just learned to play around the time. One of the first things you learn in Spades is to never renege. It fascinated me how emotional people would get that when it would happen. When I looked up the definition, one of the ones I found seemed perfect for a song. Renege: To go back on one’s word.” – Kenny Sharp explained
‘Renege’ contains a bittersweet narrative, ear-pleasing vocals, and tuneful melodies. The likable tune possesses guitar-driven instrumentation flavored with an acoustic R&B and soul aroma. Furthermore, Kenny Sharp uses the popular card game Spades as a metaphor for the feelings of passion, urgency, and betrayal of an experience that no one forgets.
