KALEN releases a sweet electro-pop single, entitled, “Honeysucker”

KALEN is a New York City-based singer-songwriter and keyboard player from New England. Not too long ago, she released a sweet electro-pop single, entitled, “Honeysucker.”

Kalen – “Honeysucker” live @ Bowery Electric

“I shared the stripped-down piano demo with Eric over the pandemic when I was living in Maine. It took us a few back-and-forths to feel that the recorded version was on track. Then, suddenly, the pieces solidified, and it quickly became a favorite. There was always patience and trust in the back and forth that it would get there. As is often the case with my songs, the producer (Eric in this case) at first wanted to cut my bridge – too weird, not pop enough, too much a departure from the song. However, as is fortunately often the case, he ended up coming around and connecting with it.” – KALEN explained

‘Honeysucker’ contains a relatable narrative and pleasing vocals that will resonate well with fans of Karen O (The Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Fiona Apple, and Kate Bush. The likable tune possesses lush bass-laden instrumentation flavored with a warm electro-pop vibration. Furthermore, “Honeysucker” is featured on KALEN’s latest indie-pop EP, entitled, “Silence Like Sirens.” The seven-track project, brimming with singable songs, was created in collaboration with Izzy Gliksberg (Late Sea), Will Bradford (SeepeopleS), and Eric Zeiler (Little Daylight, Me Not You, Young Saab).

‘Silence Like Sirens’ reflects a new kind of songwriting for KALEN. The EP expresses themes of denial in “Honeysucker” and redemption and healing in “Phoenix.” The title track, “Silence Like Sirens,” was initially about a breakup, but it felt like ancient history. Eventually, KALEN imagined a breakup with her now husband in order to be able to sing them from a place of rawness.

“Your words are sweet, they are sweet like honey.”

KALEN hones her songs into intimate cut-to-the-bone vibrations, healing the post-pandemic heart-stricken with a tender connection. She leaped headfirst into the early 2000s Brooklyn music scene blooming in derelict DIY venues and undisclosed loft parties off the L train.

With her ‘feet on the ground and her head in the sky,’ KAREN hauled her keyboard and amp up and down Bedford Ave, forging a sound rooted in soul, funk, and electronic music. During residencies at Alligator Lounge and Spike Hill, KALEN became a neighborhood mainstay, performing high-kicks and jumping off amps in kinetic kinship with the audience. So far, KAREN has played stages such as Brooklyn Bowl, Rough Trade, Joe’s Pub (NYC), DC9 (Washington, DC), One Longfellow Square (Portland, ME), Hotel Café, and The Mint (LA).
