‘Summerboy’ is about meeting someone and submitting entirely to your infatuation with them, in spite of any consequences down the line. It’s about enjoying a moment with someone while it lasts. I’m someone who thrives in the sun and feels like I’m the peak version of myself in the summertime, and that’s a sort of sexiness and confidence I wanted to put into this song.
A couple of years ago my friend Benwa (producer) sent me a demo he made featuring a luscious bossa nova-esque chord progression that immediately inspired me to write this song. We both loved the track but sat on it for a while, adding elements here and there. Then eventually I brought Flourish (producer) on board to help us finish the track, and he brought it to a place where it fits beautifully amongst the other tracks on my upcoming EP.” – Joseph Marcus explained

His sound is formed through a blend of classic Pop songwriting and contemporary electronic production, injected heavily with R&B and art pop influences. Writing songs on the piano from the age of 12, Joseph Marcus has drawn from a diverse web of musical influences from the likes of neo-soul staples Jill Scott and Musiq Soulchild to art-pop innovators such as Imogen Heap and Björk, to create music spanning the realms of both R&B and Pop.
Joseph’s debut EP, ROOT, garnered over 750,000 streams on Spotify alone. He also has multiple features on editorial Spotify playlists such as New Music Friday UK, The Pop List, and United Kingdom Viral 50. The follow-up project, “In This Room Alone,” is a creative endeavor that was self-produced and received similar support from Spotify.
Joseph has worked with established producers such as SG Lewis and Phairo (Bruno Major, Eliza, Liv Dawson…), and respected songwriters in the Pop sphere including The Six and Sophie Cooke (Frances), as well as supporting rising names such as Tom Walker and James Vickery in live shows.
