“Gorgeous” explores the theme of beauty with an enthusiastic perspective. The lyrics delve into the universality of beauty and how it often comes with its own set of challenges. The phrase, ‘it’s a crime to be gorgeous,’ implies that society sometimes scrutinizes beauty, leading to an exploration of self-image and authenticity.
Doja Cat encourages listeners to embrace their unique beauty. Her lyrics reflect a sense of empowerment, demonstrating that beauty has layers, extending beyond the surface. With lines that express confidence while acknowledging external pressures, she captures the duality of feeling both admired and judged. The repeated acknowledgment of beauty in the chorus resonates with those who feel both pride and vulnerability in their looks.
Overall, “Gorgeous” invites reflection on the burdens social media places on individuals about beauty standards. As Doja puts it, ‘Then I got surgery ’cause of scrutiny / but he like my before and after pictures, he cool wit’ these,’ she demands attention while simultaneously questioning societal norms. The juxtaposition of vulnerability and confidence showcases Doja’s depth, reminding us that beauty is subjective and multifaceted. Through “Gorgeous,” she weaves an inspiring tapestry that encourages a collective acceptance of varied beauty.

In her own words, Doja Cat explains, “The French word ‘Vie’ (translated in English: ‘life’) was a choice of wordplay by me, starting with the simple fact that this is my 5th album. I wanted to stretch this from the Roman numeral five tattoo on my collarbone. Five in numerology represents curiosity, adventure, and change. I chose ‘Vie’ as a nod to La Vie en Rose and tied it together with the theme of romance, and throughout this project, I give my interpretation of love, sex, romance, pain, and wonder within a relationship. These songs can be related to the relationship with yourself or others. I feel strongly about the meaning of the word Vie because without life, there is no love, and without love, there is no adventure. This is an adventurous album and with homages and nods to the ‘80s, ‘70s, and ‘90s, I wanted to give my own personal modern twist.”
