Covering Usher‘s “Burn” single is perhaps an unexpected move from singer-songwriter Zach Meadows (@zachtmeadows), who is known for his growly, gravely roots vocals and poignant songwriting, but his appreciation for a good song is not new, like his previous cover of Passion Pit’s “It’s Not My Fault, I’m Happy.” This Burn cover, released via The Orchard/Torrez Music Group, is a taste of new music to come from Meadows.

Meadows’ take on “Burn” showcases his vocal range, highlighting his unique soul-inflected country croon, as well as his bona fide musicianship. This arrangement breathes, giving space to the lush and twangy guitars, shimmering keys, and background vocals.
In his own words, Meadows explains, “When we started the tracking process for the next record [yet to be announced], I knew I wanted to release a cover song that could tie into the theme of the record. ‘Burn’ felt like a song that not only belonged, but also something that took me back in time to the music I grew up with in the early 2000s. For me, this record is a coming-of-age story, and ‘Burn’ is a chapter.”
Next week, Meadows will make unofficial appearances at Americanafest in Nashville, starting with Whiskey Jam on September 11. From Orlando, Florida, to Nashville, Tennessee, by way of the Carolinas, Meadows’ music is rooted in a passion for personal, expressive songwriting and a penchant for weaving experiences into something greater.
