Urban Village is a brand-new four-piece band from Soweto, South Africa. Not too long ago, they released their debut single, entitled, “Sakhisizwe”.
Urban Village – “Sakhisizwe” (LIVE)
‘Sakhisizwe’ finds Urban Village conveying a unifying message of great resonance in today’s South Africa, where a fear of the other has far from disappeared. Their video performance was recorded earlier this year in Paris. Also, the performance was a part of Nø Førmat!’s 15th-anniversary label celebrations.
‘Sakhisizwe’ means ‘to build a nation’. The likable tune contains a relatable storyline, soul vocals, and lyrics sung in Zulu and English. Also, the song possesses guitar-laden instrumentation scented with an alternative-world aroma.
“On ‘Sakhisizwe’, the next generation consult with ‘the ancients’ to rediscover a coherence, to trace a new and luminous path forward and to build a new nation together.”
Urban Village is signed to the French indie label, Nø Førmat! Records (home to Oumou Sangaré and Mélissa Laveaux). With their feet firmly in the traditions of South African music and a keen eye on the future, Urban Village knows how to navigate their country’s vast repository of rhythms.
