Sherley Gene – “On My Mama” single
“On my mama, I don’t know ya. Yeah, you know my name, but everybody know it now. Recognize ya. Nah man, you don’t look familiar. Swear, I never lie. If I knew you I’d let you know. I swear I never seen him, I know we never spoke. My mind ain’t playing tricks on me. Gotta let it go. Now just walk, walk away. Move on up, out my face. So you waited and you waited just to say that you knew me. And I waited just the same just to say I don’t know ya.” – lyrics
‘On My Mama’ tells an intriguing tale about a young woman who is approached by a guy who she doesn’t know. Apparently, he claims he knows her because they are from the same neighborhood. However, she never met him or seen his face before. Therefore, she decides to keep it moving instead of entertaining his unsolicited conversation. Furthermore, the lush music video finds Sherley Gene riffing in front of a wall of books. The artist-to-watch is wearing an all-black outfit with dark shades to match.
“Out my face ‘cause I don’t know ya.”
“‘On My Mama’ is a statement song to introduce myself as a solo artist. Also, it’s a response to the cliché pick-up line, ‘Have we met before?’ But ultimately, the message is, if you can’t see someone when they’re down, don’t act like you know them when they’re up.” – Sherley Gene explained
‘On My Mama’ contains a relatable narrative, ear-welcoming vocals, and tuneful melodies that will resonate well with fans of Kehlani, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion. Also, the groovy tune possesses bass-driven instrumentation flavored with contemporary R&B and neo-soul elements. Furthermore, “On My Mama” serves as a wonderful presentation of what listeners can expect to hear on Sherley Gene’s upcoming untitled EP.
