meka (@singingblackhole) is the musical guise of American multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Melissa Lingo, whose transcendent musicality and utterly exquisite vocal transports listeners to the hazy sweet spot of ‘60s and ‘70s folk. Not too long ago, she released her latest single, “Tomato Song,” which hits a nostalgic spot.

Piano led with gently brushed drums and intricate finger-plucked guitar influenced by Nick Drake, “Tomato Song” showcases meka’s lushly layered songwriting craft, both musically and lyrically, with the song merging quaint imagery of sitting with her mother in the garden with a melancholy, existential underbelly–merging memories, dreams, and nightmares into one beautiful song.
In her own words, meka explains, “Some things are so unbearably sad or unbearably beautiful that it’s hard for me to tell a dream from life from nightmare. My mom does sleep in the garden every summer, protecting her peas and strawberries from deer and rabbits, and you can usually find me perched somewhere with a cigarette, bargaining with death. ‘Tomato song’ is ripe with rot, an ode to the in between, to the Graveyard of Dreams, which also happens to be the Fertile Compost for Hope.”
“Tomato Song” is the second single to be taken from meka’s upcoming album “The Rabbit,” which will be released on the 21st of May 2025 via Dumont Dumont. It follows the lush chamber-pop of the first single “Temperance” (November 2024) which garnered comparisons to Joan Baez, Vashti Bunyan, and the beguiling old soul of Alela Diane. All songs on “The Rabbit” were recorded in Stockholm, Sweden, at Rymden Studios, and produced and engineered by Daniel Bengtson.
meka
meka has led an unconventional and somewhat nomadic life. She was raised in an isolated Californian mountain town dedicated entirely to astronomical research, followed by slivers of her life spent in Brazil, India, Cambodia, and Budapest before eventually arriving at Prague where she lives high in the mountains.
meka comes from four generations of musicians and storytellers and is a self-taught musician. Her deeply personal songs reflect a fascination with the cosmos and ecology, shaped by travel and solitude, and explore themes of grief, hope, and nature, giving a beautiful and rich sonic shape to the otherwise intangible.
