Exploring the Raw Emotions of Laila’s “TALK” Single

Laila (Laila Kharouba @helloitslaila) is a Toronto-based actress and singer-songwriter of Jordanian-Canadian descent. Not too long ago, she released her latest single “TALK,” a dark pop track that effortlessly blends smooth, creamy vocals with a soundscape harkening to the ever-present nostalgia of LA.

“TALK” delves into the complexities of a relationship where emotional investments clash with casual intentions. The song captures the angst and confusion that often accompany these blurred lines, offering listeners a refrain for those moments when feelings are more than just words. It pulls audiences into a world where late-night texts and lingering touches become the soundtrack of uncertain romance. The track’s atmospheric production contrasts with its raw lyrical content, painting a vivid picture of love that’s as elusive as it is intense.

Laila’s vocal delivery on “TALK” is haunting. The chorus hooks listeners with its candid questioning — “If this is only talk, why does it feel so easy?” — making it a relatable anthem for anyone who has found themselves caught in the middle of something undefined.

“TALK” was written by Laila Kharouba, Matt Snell (Dua Lipa, Future Nostalgia), and Robbie Brett; produced by Matt Snell and Robbie Brett at Genesis Sound in Toronto; mixed by Josh Bowman; and mastered by Kristian Montano. Additional production was done by Derek G. Machin.

About the song, Laila explained, “TALK! A classic tale: one person is deeply invested while the other insists things are casual. I wrote this song to make sense of a situationship (…cringe). I was in with another musician who lives in LA. We used to FaceTime for hours at a time each week. When I finally asked what we were, the answer I got was talk… not the 4-letter word I was expecting to hear. My producers and I took inspiration from Dua Lipa & Holly Humberstone for the dark pop sonic landscape. Listen to this when you rage drive home after seeing that ‘casual’ person (after you said it was the last time).”

“TALK” heralds the launch of Laila’s next project, set for completion in spring 2025. Laila has also made her mark as an actor, with a memorable role in the series finale of Netflix’s Glamorous, sharing the screen with Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall.

Laila is renowned for her infectious anthems, raw vulnerability, and delightfully chaotic energy. Drawing comparisons to Ariana Grande, Chappell Roan, and Sabrina Carpenter, she captivated audiences nationwide with her debut EP, “Heart Doesn’t Work Like That,” which earned significant airtime on CBC Radio and was celebrated at Toronto’s Pride Festival.
