Embarking on the next chapter of her career, Nigeria-born, currently London-based musical pioneer Kah-Lo (@thatkahlo) released a dazzling, retro-themed music video for her recently released single “Somersaults.”

The sound and visual aesthetic of “Somersaults” comes from a lot of the classic records that Kah-Lo was introduced to by her father, including the likes of Donna Summer, Shalamar, The Whispers, and more. The music video utilises 80s and 90s-inspired editing styles and textures to capture the track’s retro and fun vibe, and the visual minimalism further emphasises Kah-Lo’s deadpan wit and the playful determination found in her lyrics. The chic styling in the video also speaks to Kah-Lo’s growth as an artist and the maturity of style and sound she hopes to convey in her forthcoming releases.
The song finds Kah-Lo reclaiming her power, rejecting the impossible expectations of others in a bold display of defiance. Leaning into a disco-inspired sound, she delivers an instantly catchy earworm of a track, her upright vocals marching over an elastic bassline and funky drums.
There is both strength and vulnerability in Kah-Lo’s songwriting, with the lyrics “I’m giving everything I have, but it’s never good enough for you” speaking to the emotional toll of being overworked and unappreciated. Here, Kah-Lo distills her many years of experience creating infectious, genre-bending dance records into something new and potent.
In her own words, Kah-Lo explains, “I worked on it with @vonboch and @rebellon in one of my first sessions after my dad died, and I guess in craving connection with him, I was listening to a lot of music he loved and put me on. I told them this, and they were like, ‘bet.’ This is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made. Lyrically, it’s about the end of the relationship I was in the year prior. I was doing the absolute most, trying to make it work, and it wasn’t working.”
