Jordi Rex (@jordirexmusic) is an artist from Los Angeles, California. Not too long ago, she graced us with her latest single, “Down Down,” a bold declaration about the trials of navigating love. In her own words, Jordi Rex explains, “Down Down” takes you through the dynamics of a relationship with a lover who wields power like a tyrant. Like so many relationships, it starts simply and feels light and casual. I think for a lot of us, life can feel empty for these huge chunks of time, and finding someone to fill that void with is a high that can’t be replicated. But it really is shocking to see how quickly something so fun and easy can turn so heavy and complex. By the end of the first verse, feelings have already deepened to life or death, ‘Can’t live without you, don’t know what I’d do.’

The first pre-chorus is a sort of embracing of the inevitable that has been set into motion. ‘I think I might be in too deep… Baby don’t let go, no. We be going down down.’ Maybe I’m the only one who feels this way, but I think after a heartbreak or two, it’s very easy to feel jaded about new love. You know from experience how fleeting the blissful moments can be and how easily they’re replaced by lower and lower lows, and it’s completely crazy how addicting that rollercoaster ride can be.

Self-loathing is a constant for me. I think it comes hand-in-hand with greater self-awareness. The more intimately you begin to know your tendencies – and the harder you kick and scream struggling to change them – the more profound your realization of just how embedded they are. Your patterns become such a deeply-rooted part of you well before you are ever aware of them; neural pathways dug so deep that they make free will feel like a cruel delusion. Knowing how easy it is to become an overbearing tyrant when things go sour, the self-loathing comes out like a plea in the 2nd verse: ‘I know I should’ve never got to know ya. Hate to let you down, you’ll never know love without a throne.’ They’re not going anywhere. They’re mine now. And I feel sorry for them, but it’s too late to go back.

After the crescendo of a final chorus, at 3:23 we hear a break in the flow and feel a shift in ‘Down Down.’ This is what I call Part 2. This is when the clouds have settled, the thunder is crackling with those heavy 808s, and there is a deep feeling of acceptance in the lyrics. At 3:55, the tyrant finally appears without a hint of shame, ‘Boy, you’d better bow down. Kiss the ring because you’re mine now!’ For the vocal FX here, I was inspired by Dune and “The Voice” of the Bene Gesserit witches. They felt like the big screen version of how I feel when I’m at my worst: demanding obedience.

I’m a big fan of artists like RAYE, 070 Shake, and The Weeknd. I wanted ‘Down Down’ to carry some of those dark pop and R&B vibes, but I wanted to blend it with just a dash of hyperpop (the heavily distorted vocals in the chorus and wild vocal fx in 2nd part). I love what the hyperpop genre is evolving into, but some of it can feel overwhelming. It reminds me of the early dubstep days when people like Borgore were creating some hard-hitting tracks with some insane lyrics!! As dubstep evolved, newer artists began blending beautiful melodies with signature, crazy dubstep sounds, and I feel that hybrid approach really brought the genre to life and expanded its reach. I hope you enjoy ‘Down Down.’”
