Unveiling the Conceptually Driven “Fourth Wall” EP by Maiah Manser

Maiah Manser (@maiahmanser) is a Los Angeles-based, vocalist, producer, and visual artist who builds bridges between the worlds of automation and nature. Not too long ago, she released her boundary-breaking EP “Fourth Wall,” a conceptually driven project that pairs a darkly cinematic score with wry lyrics about the wages of success and fame, out now via Arista Records. Alongside the EP, Maiah also released an official music video for the focus track, “Hollywood.”

After a warm intro full of hope, “Hollywood” quickly recenters listeners. Ominous strings give way to a noirish soundscape full of staticky interruptions, clattering percussion, and dramatic keys. Maiah’s soothing voice belies a worrisome vision of Tinseltown: “Let’s run away together, where the palm trees grow. Where lily white skin turns to leather and polluted skies glow.”

“You” was the most recent song shared ahead of the EP’s release. Brightly shimmering and upbeat, the single doubles as an ice-cold dismissal to any who’d doubt Maiah’s vision.

Before “You” came the sultry “Bad Habits,” which the artist called “a futuristic cowboy-meets-camgirl song.”

It was the bittersweet viral hit “With a Smile” that kicked things off, amassing more than 11 million global streams after a teaser that garnered more than 30 million views and inspired SZA to rave, “This is the prettiest s–t I’ve seen all week.” Maiah now makes good on the moment by delivering the fully fledged “Fourth Wall” EP.

For a short set, “Fourth Wall” is packed with meaning, as Maiah explains: “My EP ‘Fourth Wall’ is a conceptual body of work that takes you on a journey about dreams of fame and success, being a woman in entertainment, the darker side of the industry, and, most importantly, learning to stay true to oneself. Sonically bathed in a cinematic and highly energetic universe, for this EP, I was incredibly inspired by how entertainers constantly break the fourth wall in the new and digital age, from a ‘for you’ algorithm to connecting with your audience.”

“In a lot of the songs, I break the fourth wall,” Maiah continues, “singing lyrics like, ‘I just want to sing for you,’ or ‘What if I act like you act?’ From beginning with a youthful hope in ‘Superstar,’ flowing to a wish to be loved in ‘Pretty Enough’ and an anger in ‘WOW’ and ‘With A Smile,’ the EP ends with a lasting statement of matured self-acceptance in ‘You.’”

Across eight lushly produced songs, Maiah brings her all, vocals shifting between eerily ethereal and sharply pointed over a shifting mix of sweeping strings, propulsive beats, and swirling atmosphere.
