Feathers

In her own words, Amy Houck explains, “‘Feathers’ was written during one of the most painful but powerful chapters of my life. I had spent so long trying to make myself smaller to be loved, dimming my light, quieting my voice, tucking away my wings just to make someone else feel enough. I thought that’s what love looked like, but really, I was losing myself piece by piece. The song came from that breaking point, from realizing I had clipped my own wings to keep someone else high, and in doing so, forgot that I was meant to fly too. Every line in ‘Feathers’ came straight from my journal; from nights I sat in silence trying to understand how love could make me feel so unseen.

I wrote ‘Feathers’ after realizing how often I had dimmed my own light in an abusive relationship, how I had clipped my wings so someone else could feel tall. It’s about the women who pour their gold down drains, trade their spark for someone’s comfort, and lose themselves piece by piece until they forget they were born to fly. When I say, ‘some of us used to fly,’ it’s not just a lyric, it’s a confession. I had to rebuild my wings from scraps, from every part of me I thought was gone. I’m a poet, and this song was poetry coming to life. ‘Feathers’ became the moment I stopped shrinking to fit someone’s shadow and started remembering to spread my wings.

As a poet, I’ve always written my healing before I could speak it, and this song was me finally saying, ‘No more.’ It’s a reminder that I don’t have to shrink to be loved, that softness and strength can live in the same woman. ‘Feathers’ became my way of taking back my power and letting every woman who’s ever forgotten her worth know that her wings were never the problem.”
