Dive into the Surreal World of Elise Trouw’s “The Perfect Girl” Single

Genre-blurring multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Elise Trouw (@elisetrouw) continues her bold new chapter with today’s release of “The Perfect Girl,” the second single from her upcoming satirical concept album “The Diary of Elon Lust,” due out February 13th via Midtopia. The new track arrives alongside a surreal, self-directed video that deepens the mythology of Elon Lust, Elise’s fictional male alter ego.

“The Perfect Girl” draws from a memory that’s stuck with Elise since middle school: the day a group of boys made a “hot or not” list ranking all the girls in class. The song is absurdly upbeat – Elon rattles off ideal features like a Frankenstein sculptor – but the subtext is darker. “It was one of the first moments I realized how girls were being seen,” she says. “It wasn’t much about who we were. It was about how we looked. That never really left me.”

The accompanying video leans into satire and spectacle, featuring Elise in full Elon Lust persona leading a classroom presentation on how to construct “The Perfect Girl.” Using an overhead projector, dancing nurses, and visual diagrams, Elon delivers his lecture with the same over-the-top sincerity that made the “All You Need Is Lust” video such a fever dream. Like the music, the visuals push discomfort and comedy to a boiling point.

“The Perfect Girl” follows the release of “All You Need Is Lust,” which introduced the Elon Lust character through a hypnotic groove and a surreal music video inspired by Hieronymus Bosch – complete with cherry-headed dancers, giant boob costumes, and a fever-dream aesthetic. As with all of her work, Elise directed the video herself and oversaw every element of the creative process.

“The Diary of Elon Lust” Album

“The Diary of Elon Lust” marks a radical departure – and also the most honest work – of Elise’s career. Told entirely through the voice of Elon, a fictional twenty-something male alter ego, the album dissects modern masculinity through playful, uncomfortable, occasionally absurd vignettes that blend humor and social commentary with deeply personal truth. Elon is part archetype, part confession, part cautionary tale – stitched together from things men have said to Elise, to her friends, or to you.

While her past work has always showcased technical brilliance, Elon Lust allows for something more: vulnerability, agency, and sharp discomfort. The drums are still there, the grooves still tight – but this time, Elise isn’t hiding behind them. She’s stepping forward, even if it means letting go of perfection.

The Diary of Elon Lust will be released digitally on February 13th via Midtopia, with physical vinyl editions available through the Buy Before You Stream initiative.
