Unpacking the Layers of “Deeper” by MBK ZO and Pk tha Poet

Pk tha Poet (@pkthapoet) is an artist-producer from the projects of Chicago, and later relocated to Arizona. MBK ZO (@mbkzo) is an emerging R&B artist with roots in Southern California, now making waves in Phoenix, Arizona. Not too long ago, they released a very Afro-Caribbean/Afro-R&B single, “Deeper,” featured on their debut  EP, “Pick Up The Phone.”

Deeper

“Deeper” resonates profoundly with anyone who has experienced the complexities of relationships. The line, ‘the speakers keep playing our song,’ and ‘I didn’t know how good it was until I let it go’ reflect on how music often encapsulates emotions that words alone cannot express. In moments of remembrance, it becomes clear that some connections are etched deeply within us, paving the way for nostalgia and yearning.

“Deeper” paints a vivid picture of desire intertwined with the fear of loss, and depicts the push and pull of unforgettable experiences. The metaphorical ‘crossing deeper waters’ highlights the emotional risks involved in love. This tension adds depth to the song, making listeners ponder the essence of vulnerability in relationships.

The repeated phrase ‘pop pop pop pop pop’ creates a rhythmic heartbeat throughout the track, symbolizing the urgency of attraction. The lyrics express a desire for reconnection—’it’s been too hard to reach you’—reminding listeners that love requires not just affection but also persistence. In a world filled with distractions, true connection can often feel elusive, making lines like ‘we don’t got nothing to prove’ resonate even more.

Overall, “Deeper” is an exploration of what it means to love fiercely, while acknowledging the fear of heartbreak. The lyrics remind us of the intricate dance between desire and emotional safety, propelling us to reflect on our own experiences within the narrative of love.

In his own words, Pk tha Poet explains, “‘Deeper’ is basically about the feelings you get when locking with a special someone. You just want to do it all with them, not knowing you’re falling deeper and deeper.”

Pk tha Poet (Poet is an acronym: Pieces Of Everlasting Thoughts) has been making his name in Phoenix. Linking up with artists such as Jaywop and going to open mics for 156 consecutive weeks allowed him to sharpen his craft of expression. Mixing his love for poetry, jazz, and live instrumentation over hip-hop beats, his sound places him between J. Cole and Tobe Nwigwe. His song “16bars to My Nation,” released in 2017, is what opened the gate for him to be nationally accepted. However, it wasn’t until the beginning of 2019 that we started to see him release full bodies of work. Traveling through the states, creating, performing, and releasing new music in a way like no other. It is exciting to see where this journey may lead.
